A Green That Rolls True

Backyard putting greens are synthetic greens with a short, dense putting surface, cups and usually a fringe of longer turf around them. Golf is a big part of life around Orlando, and a green in the backyard or beside the pool cage lets you practice lag putts and short game without driving to the course. The surface is what you see, but the speed and roll of the ball come from the base underneath.

Why the base is different for a green

A lawn can hide small bumps. A putting green cannot: a ball shows every dip. We build the base in compacted layers of fine crushed stone and screed it to a smooth finish, then shape gentle breaks if you want them. Each layer is compacted and checked before the turf goes down. The base also has to drain, because a green that holds water after an Orlando storm stays slow and soft.

Putting turf options

Putting surfaces are short and dense. Some are nylon, which is firm and resists matting; others are polyethylene or textured blends that hold a shot better. Some greens are filled with sand to set speed, and the amount of infill changes how fast the ball rolls. We bring samples and explain how each plays.

Design: cups, fringe and chipping

Most backyard greens have two to four cups so you can practice different distances and breaks. A fringe of longer turf frames the green and catches chip shots. If you want to chip from a distance, we can add a tee or chipping area of longer turf and shape the green to accept a pitch. Placement matters too: shade from a large oak slows drying after rain, while full sun keeps the surface drier but hotter in summer.

Greens beside pools and lanais

Many Central Florida greens sit next to a screened pool enclosure or patio. We plan the edges so the green meets pavers cleanly, keep sprinkler overspray off it, and grade so pool deck runoff does not drain across the putting surface.

Upkeep

A green needs occasional brushing to keep the surface consistent, a leaf blower to clear debris, and infill topped up where it migrates. Oak leaves and acorns are the main nuisance in many Orlando yards; a quick blow-off keeps the roll true.

Putting Greens Questions

How much does a backyard putting green cost?

HomeAdvisor's 2026 figures average about $4,300, with a typical range of $3,500 to $9,000. Small greens cost more per square foot, about $25 to $40, than large ones. Contours, cups, fringe and chipping areas all affect the price.

How big should a backyard putting green be?

It depends on your yard and what you want to practice. A few hundred square feet with three cups covers most short putting. Longer lag putts and chipping need more room. We sketch options during the estimate.

Does a synthetic green drain after rain?

Yes, if the base is built porous and graded properly. Putting turf has a permeable backing, and the stone base lets water pass through. A green should be playable shortly after a typical afternoon storm.

Can the speed of the green be adjusted?

Somewhat. The turf product sets the basic speed, and the amount of sand infill and how it is brushed changes it. We set it at installation and explain how to adjust it.
