Turf That Holds Up to Dogs
Pet turf is synthetic grass built for dogs: a fully permeable backing, a tougher blade and an infill chosen to manage odor. In Orlando, dog owners usually call for one of three reasons. The yard turns to mud every afternoon in the wet season, the dog has worn bare paths along the fence, or urine has burned brown spots across the lawn. Pet turf fixes all three, but only if the base under it is designed to drain liquid as fast as it arrives.
Why drainage matters more for pets
Rain is spread across the whole yard. Urine lands in the same few spots again and again. If it cannot pass through the backing and the base quickly, it collects, and in Florida heat that means odor. For pet areas we use a fully permeable backing rather than a punched-hole backing where possible, and a crushed-stone base compacted to stay porous. On Orlando's deep sand, water and urine pass through the base into the soil below.
Infill and odor
Infill is the granular material brushed between the blades. Florida DEP's rulemaking materials for the residential turf standards say no rubber infill, so we work with mineral-based options. Silica sand is common; for pets, many installers use zeolite or coated sand products designed to hold and neutralize ammonia between rinses. We explain the options and what each needs in upkeep.
Heat and your dog
Synthetic turf in direct sun gets much hotter than grass. UF/IFAS research reported surface readings up to 174°F on the hottest days, and a UNLV study measured turf up to 69°F hotter than irrigated grass. Dogs feel that through their paws. We plan pet turf with this in mind: shaded side yards and areas under a lanai or tree canopy work well, and on open sun-exposed runs we talk about shade sails, lighter-colored products, and a quick hose-down before letting dogs out on summer afternoons.
Designing a dog run
Dogs run the fence line, so we pay extra attention to edges there: turf fastened tightly along borders so it cannot be dug up, and a clean transition to pavers or gravel at gates. For diggers, the compacted base and secured edges make it far harder to tunnel. If you only need a potty area, a smaller patch near the back door can be sloped toward a drainage point and rinsed easily.
Keeping it clean
Pick up solid waste as you would on grass. Rinse urine spots with a hose regularly, more often in summer, and use an enzyme cleaner when odor builds. Storms help by flushing the turf, but in dry spells you will rinse more. Mosquitoes need standing water to breed; a properly drained pet area does not hold it.

How It Works
1. See how the dogs use the yard
We look at paths, digging spots, shade, gates and how water drains.
2. Pick products
We match turf, backing and infill to your dogs and your sun exposure.
3. Build the base
Old grass comes out, the soil is graded and a porous base is compacted.
4. Install and secure
Turf is laid, edges fastened along the fence line and infill brushed in.

Pet Turf Questions
Does pet turf smell in Florida heat?
It can if urine cannot drain or is never rinsed. A fully permeable backing, a porous base and odor-control infill reduce it. Regular hose rinsing, especially in dry spells, and an enzyme cleaner when needed keep it in check.
Is artificial turf too hot for dogs?
In direct summer sun it can be. Turf surface temperatures far above air temperature have been measured. Shade, lighter turf colors and hosing the area down before dogs go out all help. Shaded runs are the easiest fit.
Can dogs dig through artificial turf?
It is much harder than digging through grass. Turf laid on a compacted stone base and fastened tightly at the edges gives dogs little to grab. Persistent diggers may still worry an edge, so we secure borders along fence lines carefully.
What infill is best for dogs?
DEP's rulemaking materials for Florida's residential turf standards say no rubber infill, and we do not use it. For pets, zeolite and coated sand products are common because they help manage ammonia odor. We go over the options and their upkeep at the estimate.
