Artificial Turf in Clermont, FL

Hills, Sand and a Thirsty Lawn

Artificial turf in Clermont faces conditions you will not find in most of Central Florida. Wikipedia notes that the Clermont area lies on the northern part of the Lake Wales Ridge, with rolling hills unusual for the Florida peninsula and an elevation of about 125 feet. The ridge is made of relic sand dunes with very deep, porous sands that drain fast. That combination of slope and loose sand changes how a synthetic lawn has to be built.

Building turf on a slope

On flat ground, water drains straight down through the backing. On a Clermont hillside, it also runs across the surface and along the base, and in a summer downpour it can carry sand with it. For sloped yards we:

  • Compact the base in thinner lifts so it locks together
  • Install a firm edge restraint on the downhill side
  • Use extra nails or staples on steeper grades so the turf does not creep
  • Steer runoff from roofs and driveways away from the turf edge

The goal is a lawn that looks the same after its tenth storm as it did on day one.

Watering limits in Lake County

When we checked the St. Johns River Water Management District's watering page in October 2026, Water Shortage Order 2026-017 listed Lake County under a Phase III Extreme Water Shortage (areas of the county overseen by another district follow that district's rules). Under Phase III, residential irrigation is cut to one day a week, up to three-quarters of an inch per zone, and never between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. On ridge sand that drains as quickly as Clermont's, a grass lawn on one watering day a week has a hard time. Turf takes that problem off the table. Confirm the current rules for your address with the district, since phases change.

New neighborhoods, HOA rules

Clermont's population grew more than 250 percent from 2000 to 2020, according to Wikipedia, and much of that growth is in newer subdivisions with homeowner associations. Section 720.3045 of Florida law limits HOAs from restricting artificial turf that is not visible from the frontage or an adjacent parcel, so most back yards are fair game. Front yards may still need architectural approval. Send us your community's guidelines and we will pick a product and color that fits them.

Lakes downhill from your yard

The city sits by the Clermont chain of lakes, and Wikipedia notes that runoff from residential development has hurt the lakes. A properly built turf lawn needs no fertilizer and no weed and feed, which means less nutrient runoff heading downhill. We also keep turf edges from channeling water onto neighbors' lots or the street.

Clermont Questions

Can artificial turf go on a steep Clermont backyard?

Most slopes can take turf with the right prep. We compact the base in layers, add a solid downhill edge and fasten the turf more closely. Very steep banks may be better suited to plantings or a retaining wall, and we will tell you if that is the case.

Why does my grass die even when I water on my allowed day?

Clermont's ridge sand drains very fast, and when Phase III limits apply, irrigation is down to one day a week outside 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Turf removes the need to water the lawn area at all.

My HOA is strict. Will they allow turf?

Florida's section 720.3045 limits HOAs from restricting turf that cannot be seen from the frontage or an adjacent parcel. Front yards and visible side yards may still need approval, so we provide samples and specs for your application.

Will rain wash out the base on a hill?

Not if it is built correctly. Washouts happen when a base is thin, loosely compacted or lacks an edge restraint. We address all three and route roof and driveway runoff away from the turf.
